French Language Health Services

The health needs of diverse groups, including the French-speaking community, are a key priority for the North West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN). Guided by legislation, the LHIN works with partners in its geographic region to improve access to and availability of high-quality health services provided in French.

Francophone Demographics in the North West LHIN

The French presence in Ontario dates back nearly 400 years to the establishment of the Mission of Sainte-Marie-Among-the-Hurons (Simcoe County) in 1639. Like the general population of Ontario, the Franco-Ontarian communities are diverse and vibrant. For many years, it has welcomed Francophones from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Today, Francophone racial minorities represent 10% of the province’s Francophone population. Ontario is home to 611,500 Franco-Ontarians.

Approximately 134,775 Francophones live in the North, which includes both the North West and the North East LHINs.
